Kathy: Charlie and I will always be Aggies at heart, but since we've just graduated and are moving on from a little town called College Station, we wanted to let you know about the places we loved to eat and have already begun to miss.
My personal favorite is a place that popped up during the second half of our college careers called Shiraz Shish Kabob, a Persian restaurant with a limited menu of grilled meats and few other items, but every single thing we've ever ordered has been delicious! Skewers of delicately spiced ground beef, tender chunks of lamb, cornish game hen, and slices of juicy steak grilled to perfection over an open flame, served with charred tomatoes and basmati rice... sounds simple but so perfect together! My favorite thing to order here, though, is definitely the braised lamb shank on green rice. It's a huge lamb shank cooked for hours until the succulent meat is falling off the bone onto the platter of basmati rice loaded with dill and flecked with lima beans. I don't even like lima beans, but they are tender and buttery in this dish, and the parsley and cilantro served on the side freshen up the whole thing.
Charlie: I. Love. This. PLACE! My favorite thing to get here is the Sultan's Platter because it comes with a Shiraz shish kabob(seasoned ground beef) and a beef fillet kabob. Everything here they stab with a skewer and put on a plate is GOOD. Word of warning, vegetarians are limited to a few items on the menu, so get with the program and try some of this meat! We've tried a highly rated place similar to Shiraz here in Houston (to be reviewed later) and Shiraz is definitely our pick of the two. They just expanded their menu too, branching out to lunchtime patrons by adding things like Gyros and offering lunch portions. Their appetizers are awesome too if you like hummus, baba gannouj, and tabouli. Their hummus is creamy, garlicky goodness, not to mention it comes with their grilled flat bread that's so big it could be mistaken for a hubcap. The baba gannouj is rich, smokey, and with a hint of lemon which also goes well with the flat bread.
Kathy: Before you leave, don't forget to order baklava! It's sweet, flaky and pairs perfectly with the pot of Persian tea that comes with it for free. The Persian tea is accented with warm, spicy, and almost fruity cardamom. If you're ever in the area and looking something different from the bbq, Mexican, and southern fare that reigns the town, give Shiraz a try... we're glad we did!
Hungrily Ever After,
Kat and Chuck
